Observational Homework

(Modified from Robert Keel)

Observe a GROUP of people using a particular psychoactive drug. NOTE: DO NOT indicate WHO it was that you were observing in ANY of your writings. To do so will violate privacy of your subjects.

Answer the following questions in a concise, thematic, double-spaced, type-written paper, to be turned in to me in class. Your paper should be no more than 2-3 pages. Anything over 3 pages will not be read

  • From research and/or observation specifically and clearly list and describe 5 subjective and 5 objective effects. (You may use any websites or text references that pass your scrutiny and seem appropriate as references.)
  • What qualifies the substance these people are using as a psychoactive substance (be precise and specific)?
  • Do these people use the drug individually or in groups? What are the characteristics of the group (group structure: roles, status, norms, rituals, language, values)? If used individually, what part does the drug appear to play in the person's life? If used in a group, what part does the drug play in the group's interaction?
  • How do the patterns of use that you describe compare to the patterns of drug use we have been studying in class?
