Sense Assignment

In class and in the text, we have been discussing the different parts of the nervous system, and their functions. We have also been discussing the senses. The senses of smell and of hearing are two senses which are often able to elicit strong and emotional memories from people.

For the first part of this assignment, try to recall and describe a time when a certain smell, or a certain sound elicited a strong and vivid memory. What was the memory? How did you feel at the time? How does that sound or smell make you feel now?

Spend a paragraph or two (no more than that) describing your experience.

The second part of the assignment requires you to look over what you have written, and use the information that has been provided to you in your text and in class to determine what parts of the nervous system were most likely involved in your experience. Then, describe the sequence of nervous system events that underlie your sound or smell-elicited memory. What sensory apparatus was being used? From there, where does the incoming signal go next? What other parts of the brain and nervous system are at work?

Be sure to account for ALL aspects of the experience (detecting the signal, interpreting it, having the memory, and having the emotion). Be sure also to include a paragraph with your decisions about what parts of the nervous system are at work in your smell or sound-elicited "flashback," and why you believe that those particular anatomical features are implicated.

USE YOUR OWN WORDS. Don't copy or quote extensively from the text or from my lecture notes. Your entire paper need be no longer than a page. But it should be typed and double-spaced, and should include your name and the signed Honor Code pledge on the back side.
